Would you really want to know?

A new Alzheimer’s study has provided evidence that a bio-marker test can be used to reliably determine an Alzheimer’s disease diagnosis much earlier than previously thought.

The fascinating news about this article is that a diagnosis can be made from spinal fluid before many symptoms have appeared.

After a 5 year-follow up, the study predicted 100% of patients with mild cognitive impairment who progressed to full-blown Alzheimer’s.

The test also found that 72% of people with mild cognitive impairment and 36% of cognitively normal adults showed early signs of Alzheimer’s pathology in these spinal fluid tests. This suggests that a diagnosis may be made much earlier than previously thought.

This brings the Question?

Would you really want to know if Alzheimer’s was in your future?

I’m not totally sure what my answer would be. I think it would be “Yes” …and “No”

I’d like to make a few of the decisions that my Mom was unable to make until it was too late. Yet, the prospect of knowing what’s ahead — that’s a little unnerving.

What would you do? Have the test– or not?

Tough call. I’d like to know to make appropriate plans. On the other hand, I’m phobic about needles, especially in my spine. Not sure I could bring myself to do it until they can find a better way. There’s quite a lot of risk to those spinal procedures too.

Penny, that’s sort of how I felt. Some days I want to know and some days I don’t.
Unfortunately for me, I have COPD and have begun to have memory issues regarding oxygen intake. Now, I am reading even more about dementia than ever before in an attempt to learn the best things to do for myself.

When my Mom was diagnosed I knew nothing and it was a difficult learning spell for a year or so. Now, I’m glad for what I’ve already learned and ready to learn and search and find more answers for my hubby to use while he’s my caregiver.

Everyone has unique circumstances, though. And truthfully, if dementia hadn’t entered my own life, I would not have wanted to know.

Definitely, I do take the test. Knowing the truth I would take action in time
