The Famous Faces of Alzheimer’s
We often feel alone if we have symptoms of Alzheimer’s or we Care for a loved one with Alzheimer’s. Many folks hideaway or become reclusive while caring for some one with these odd symptoms. But, seeing the Famous Faces of Alzheimer’s gives us a sense of camaraderie, somehow.
For many years in the past, family members would hide those with Alzheimer’s dementia.
When my mom began showing odd symptoms of forgetfulness, Alzheimer’s never entered my mind. I didn’t know the symptoms of Alzheimer’s, nor anyone else in our family who had ever been ill with Alzheimer’s.
The odd part of that is that since my Mom passed away with Alzheimer’s I have learned that my Grandmother and Uncle also passed with Alzheimer’s many years before.
But currently, more folks are coming forward with their relatives or their own symptoms of this disease. And it’s a blessing to associate with others and learn from their own past experiences of coping with this illness.
Publicly, more celebrities have come forward with their story of Alzheimer’s; Barry Petersen with wife Jan, Glenn Campbell, Tennessee Basketball Coach Pat Summit and a few others.
But there have been many more who preceded these few and Toni Wombaker has created a stirring video of even more famous folks who succumbed to Alzheimer’s.

Thank you. I never knew about Jimmy Stewart, Norman Rockwell or Perry Como. I’d forgotten about Charlton Heston one of my mom’s and my favorite actors. I remember George Clooney making a crass joke about Mr. Heston at an awards show because of his involvement with the NRA. I was young back then, my mom was vibrant in late middle age. I was offended not because of the joke about a disease I had no clue about but because I loved Charlton Heston NRA and all.
Neither my mom nor I were fans of President Reagan. We are Californians and that opinion was forged around the time I was born when he was governor. I remember hearing bad thing about him at the dinner table when my family got together. On the flip side we are both huge fans of Mrs. Reagan for the love and grace she showed when dealing with this horrible disease attacked the man she loved.
Last summer my mom had been acting erratic for about 6 months. She had surgery prior to that, not only did she never recover her strength but she continued to deteriorate. It could have been worse, that same surgery and operation which is minor, killed Joan Rivers. My mom had it done twice because they screwed up the first time. She ended up in a facility and her denial was over. The easiest way to explain to her why she cooked no longer live with me was that she had what Ronald Reagan had. She doesn’t know exactly what he had but she knows Nancy had to go into full caretaker mode and into stateswoman mode when there were events he would have normally attended.
The Reagans story helped me explain to her what she has and she understands it in her way. For that I’m thankful. I would love to meet Nancy and thank her for that and for bring a wonderful woman and example because now I know what really happened when he was no longer seen in public.

Some of these folks I already knew about, but was surprised by a few; Perry Como, Norman Rockwell, Jimmy Stewart and Sugar Ray Robinson. WOW! This is such a sad disease. I’m hoping that there will be some sort of break through soon on solving how to prevent it or cure it.
Nancy, I was surprised by a few of these also. Some families don’t like others to know that their loved one had Alzheimer’s. I’m not sure why, but they would rather keep it quiet.
I do agree, I hope there is a cure within the coming generation. A lot of things sound promising, so maybe.
