Norman McNamara offers Support for others with Alzheimer’s and their Caregivers

Norm-MacNorman McNamara, also known as Norm Mac to all his Facebook friends, lives in a small town in Devon, England called Torbay. Although Norman has Alzheimer’s dementia himself, he offers support for others like himself, with Alzheimer’s dementia as well.

Norman is a resident of such a small town, not to mention his diagnosis of Alzheimer’s, Norm has done  amazing things!

He’s become one of the most outspoken and steadfast authors and advocates for others with Alzheimer’s and Dementia.

Norm helped to found “Dementia Awareness Day,” or D.A.D day as it’s fondly called,  in the UK (United Kingdom) on Sept 17th 2011.

This year Awareness Day is to be held in Torbay during the week of Monday September 16th, 2013, ending Saturday/ Sunday Sept., 21st/22nd. Though not finalized, this is the plan so  Awareness Day in the UK will coincide with World Alzheimer’s day on Sept 21, 2013. Surely a global affair this year!

Each year the UK chooses one charity as “Charity of the Year” and this year that charity is Alzheimer’s Research. Norm Mac’s support for those with Alzheimer’s and Caregivers has helped to make that happen.

Last year Norm Mac and the Torbay Dementia Action Alliance were asked to create Dementia friendly communites and raise awareness. In just under 15 MONTHS they have brought the message about Dementia to more than 450 Businesses, continuing to add more each day.

Not only does Norman care and support those with Alzheimer’s and their Caregivers, but he invites many many others to join him.

All Stagecoach buses in Torbay now carry the Purple Dementia awareness Angel next to the blue Disabled Badge. Not only will these be seen by those who live in Torbay but also thousands who visit the English Rivera each year.

Besides Norm’s public good works and support for those with Alzheimer’s and dementia, he has also written 3 books about his own experiences with Alzheimer’s dementia to assist others who have the same symptoms he lives with everyday.

One book is poetry, but Norm also fills posts on Facebook with many other rhymes and writings of encouragement that are free for the taking.

Norman MacNamara shares! He shares his happy moments and his sad, and he continues to endure and grow and stay happy–no matter what his own circumstance may be.

Norman MacNamara’s Books are:

Silent Voice`s “My Battle With Alzheimer`s Rages On
Me and My Alzheimer’s
More than Words – Poems – My everyday fight with Alzheimer’s

Norm says: “At the age of 50 yrs old I was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s.  I am now 53 yrs old and have every intention of beating it! Please join me on my journey, my highs and my terrible lows as I fight the biggest battle of my life.”
