Comfort Clothing for someone with Alzheimer’s, Dementia or other Memory Loss

08/226 Comments

COMFORT CLOTHING is a Must-Have for those with disabilities

When choosing comfort clothing for my Mom, I tried to think of practicality too– but comfort first. In early stages of Dementia, she chose her own wardrobe but in later stages of Alzheimer’s, I had to choose what she would wear.

Easy, pull-over tops and pull-on pants and shirts are best. It is quite easy to find this sort of pants and tops for either Men or Women.

Buttons, Zippers and Snaps can be difficult for the person with Alzheimer’s to deal with. As they become frustrated with dressing, the gradually refuse to change clothes at all but prefer to wear the same clothes day after day.

The person with Alzheimer’s, Dementia or other memory loss eventually loses a sense of  time and seasons. They may want to wear a heavy winter coat when it’s 80 degrees outside,  or a sundress when it’s snowing. So at some point, you must step-in and make the clothing choices for your loved one.

As with many other decisions, if handled tactfully without offending the person with Dementia, there will be few objections to your choosing their clothing. For me, the key was to allow Mom to feel that she made the decisions, I just helped carry-out her plans and ideas.

Pull-over shirts and tops are super comfortable, the most convenient and the easiest to put on or take off.  The Mountain has many exciting T-shirts with almost anyone’s favorite thing on the front! They are inexpensive and fun to collect favorites.

If you need something more dressy, a solid, cotton button-down shirt would be fine but prepare to offer assistance with the buttons on the front!

Shoes with Velcro Closures are a must. No more embarrassment because they can’t remember how to tie their shoes. No tripping if struggling with a limp, a cane, or dangling shoe laces. Sneakers are comfortable and fashionable too, they can be worn almost every where. Below are Sneakers for  Men or Women with easy-wear Velcro closures. or zipper, plus they are comfy and don’t require the additional hassle of a belt.
