THREE WAYS TO LOWER CHOLESTEROL NOW

Lowering Cholesterol is not only important for the person with Alzheimer’s but it’s important for all of us.

High Cholesterol levels make us all more susceptible to Heart Attacks and Strokes. Though cholesterol exists normally throughout the body, when the levels become too high it’s a hazard in many ways.

There are three ways to lower cholesterol naturally and live healthy:
Diet, Exercise, Weight Loss

Sometimes it’s more difficult to keep the elderly patient’s Cholesterol levels down, since exercise is so important. Some older folks lack the stamina or good joints from their younger years. Yet, we have to remember the latest news from Nursing Homes across the country.

Registrations skyrocket at Nursing Homes that offer Nintendo Wii Bowling on a Wide-screen Television. So some of these elderly folks are doing  just fine with their exercise routines.

DIET AND WEIGHT LOSS

WebMd Gave 5 Nutrition Strategies for lowering cholesterol naturally through diet. And fortunately, if you’re working on a diet to cope with cholesterol you will probably lose weight also

A few excerpts from WebMD’s Article can be found <here>

By paying attention to what you eat, you can lower Cholesterol and your risk of heart attack and stroke.  A heart-healthy diet can help reduce total LDL cholesterol (the bad cholesterol), lower blood pressure, lower blood sugars, and reduce body weight.

  1. Eat more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains and legumes. You might also choose to take plant stanols or sterols as a dietary supplement.
  2. Choose fat calories wisely. Limit total fat grams eaten daily. Eat as few saturated and trans fats as possible.
  3. Eat a variety — and just the right amount — of protein foods. Commonly eaten protein foods (meat, dairy products) are among the main culprits in increasing heart disease risk. Balance the risk by eating lots of fish and vegetables for your protein sources rather than meat and dairy.
  4. Limit cholesterol consumption. Get energy by eating complex carbohydrates (whole wheat pasta, brown or wild rice, whole-grain breads) and limit simple carbohydrates (regular soft drinks, sugar, sweets). If you have high cholesterol, these simple carbohydrates exacerbate the condition and may increase your risk for heart disease.
  5. Eat Regularly –It’s better to eat 5-6 mini-meals every day than to skip meals.  When you skip meals, you tend to eat more when it’s mealtime again.

Even if the artery clogging process has already begun, changing your diet now can slow down this process. With lifestyle changes, you may even be able to reverse the narrowing of arteries that has already begun.

If your loved one is residing in a nursing home or other facility, you might check their menu too, for a good cholesterol lowering diet!
