- Eat more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains and legumes. You might also choose to take plant stanols or sterols as a dietary supplement.
- Choose fat calories wisely. Limit total fat grams eaten daily. Eat as few saturated and trans fats as possible.
- Eat a variety — and just the right amount — of protein foods. Commonly eaten protein foods (meat, dairy products) are among the main culprits in increasing heart disease risk. Balance the risk by eating lots of fish and vegetables for your protein sources rather than meat and dairy.
- Limit cholesterol consumption. Get energy by eating complex carbohydrates (whole wheat pasta, brown or wild rice, whole-grain breads) and limit simple carbohydrates (regular soft drinks, sugar, sweets). If you have high cholesterol, these simple carbohydrates exacerbate the condition and may increase your risk for heart disease.
- Eat Regularly –It’s better to eat 5-6 mini-meals every day than to skip meals. When you skip meals, you tend to eat more when it’s mealtime again.
