I love my coffee– So, does it really fight Alzheimer’s too?

I Love My Coffee — but will it stop Alzheimer’s if it’s in my genes?

There’s nothing like a cup of hot coffee when I have a deadline to meet or workload that pushes me to work through breakfast and lunch!

Occasionally, coffee is the liquid that keeps me going when I’m running behind and have no time for nonsense.

Then, to learn that an article written in http://www.worldpharmanews.com/ also touts coffee as a fighter against the Tau build-up that eventually leads to Alzheimer’s– that’s incredible.
It’s true. A German-French research project led by Dr. Christa E. Müller from the University of Bonn and Dr. David Blum from the University of Lille was able to demonstrate for the first time that Caffeine has a positive affect on Tau deposits in the brain.

Beta-amyloid plaques along with Tau deposits are among the characteristic features of Alzheimer’s disease. These deposits interrupt the communication of the nerve cells in the brain and begin their degeneration which ultimatley can lead to Alzheimer’s / dementia.

Despite many studies and years of research no drug has been found to prevent this negative process on these nerve cells.

Yet, due to the results of Prof. Dr. Christa Müller from the University of Bonn, Dr. David Blum and their team, a new class of drugs might now be developed for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease.

“We have taken a good step forward,” says Prof. Müller. “The results of the study are truly promising, since we were able to show for the first time that A2A adenosine receptor antagonists actually have very positive effects in an animal model simulating hallmark characteristics and progression of the disease. And the adverse effects are minor.”
The article goes on to say: “The researchers now want to test the A2A antagonist in additional animal models. If the results are positive, a clinical study may follow. “Patience is required until A2A adenosine receptor antagonists are approved as new therapeutic agents for Alzheimer’s disease. But I am optimistic that clinical studies will be performed,” says Prof. Müller.

With constant research and more studies like these, we’re ever  closer to a cure from this disease.
