Comfort Clothing for someone with Alzheimer’s, Dementia or other Memory Loss

COMFORT CLOTHING is a Must-Have for those with disabilities

When choosing comfort clothing for my Mom, I tried to think of practicality too– but comfort first. In early stages of Dementia, she chose her own wardrobe but in later stages of Alzheimer’s, I had to choose what she would wear.

Easy, pull-over tops and pull-on pants and shirts are best. It is quite easy to find this sort of pants and tops for either Men or Women.

Buttons, Zippers and Snaps can be difficult for the person with Alzheimer’s to deal with. As they become frustrated with dressing, the gradually refuse to change clothes at all but prefer to wear the same clothes day after day.

The person with Alzheimer’s, Dementia or other memory loss eventually loses a sense of  time and seasons. They may want to wear a heavy winter coat when it’s 80 degrees outside,  or a sundress when it’s snowing. So at some point, you must step-in and make the clothing choices for your loved one.

As with many other decisions, if handled tactfully without offending the person with Dementia, there will be few objections to your choosing their clothing. For me, the key was to allow Mom to feel that she made the decisions, I just helped carry-out her plans and ideas.

Pull-over shirts and tops are super comfortable, the most convenient and the easiest to put on or take off.  The Mountain has many exciting T-shirts with almost anyone’s favorite thing on the front! They are inexpensive and fun to collect favorites.

If you need something more dressy, a solid, cotton button-down shirt would be fine but prepare to offer assistance with the buttons on the front!

Shoes with Velcro Closures are a must. No more embarrassment because they can’t remember how to tie their shoes. No tripping if struggling with a limp, a cane, or dangling shoe laces. Sneakers are comfortable and fashionable too, they can be worn almost every where. Below are Sneakers for  Men or Women with easy-wear Velcro closures. or zipper, plus they are comfy and don’t require the additional hassle of a belt.

Where can you find men’s pull up trousers that are NOT fleece lined jogging bottoms.?

      Hello Marilyn,
Oh, I certainly understand how difficult it can be to find clothing that’s both convenient and attractive too. For my Mom it was a little easier, soft, pull-up pants were easy to find. Not so easy to find those for a man, though, I’m sure.

When I’m looking for a particular item for someone with a disability, I usually check

Silvert’s – Adaptive Clothing and Foot Wear

. They carry all things adaptive for people with diabilities. Their clothing for those with Alzheimer’s is exceptionally intuitive.

I found some wonderful house shoes for my Mom there. And I do see that they have adapative pants for men, even nice, dress pants, not just sweat pants as you mentioned. Give them a try and I hope they’ll have what you need.

Thank you for checking with us and all our best!
      Sandy

Thank you for your suggestion of Silvert’s clothing but due to $30 shipping to the UK on top of the cost it takes their clothing out of my price range.

      Hello Marilyn,
Oh, that would be cost prohibitive. Have you tried Amazon? They do have pull-on Men’s Pants in different colors. They are athletic but not like sweat pants and do have a dressy appearance.
