Alzheimer’s Fidget Quilts for Sale Online

Aprons, Purses and more

fidget-apronFidget quilts are a happy resource for the person with dementia and fidgeting fingers.

While caring for my Mom with dementia, I noticed that she could not stop fidgeting her hands. Sometimes she would wring her hands until I thought a finger might surely break.

Mom was a “depression” baby and as a young girl she watched her family struggle and strive to make a living while the depression and its financial crises  of the ’30’s weighed down on them.

From this experience during her youth, Mom once again worried about money as the dementia began to kidnap her thoughts. Mom would spend hours wringing her hands like a wash rag, and worrying her fingers till they were red.

Finally, I retrieved an old purse and filled it with things she loved; a crinkled bank statement, small photo album, pen, seek-n-find book and a tube of red lipstick. She was a blonde and loved deep red lipstick. That purse swung from her arm whenever she left her room, even after she’d moved to a Group Home shortly before her passing.

When I first wrote an article about an Alzheimer’s  Fidget Blanket/ Quilt, I thought of Mom and her “purse.” She would have loved a Fidget Blanket. I know many of you have been searching for one also as I’ve read your letters.

I recently found the Sweetest Fidget Blankets that I’ve seen. She creates Patchwork Quilts for sale online and much much more.  Besides Fidget Quilts, this seller also crafts; Fidget Aprons, Fidget Bibs, Fidget Purses, aprons and more. And she accepts Custom Orders! Male or Female, even quilts on sale for the Autistic Child. You can find Nan on Etsy.

I feel it is a shame these quilts are called fidget quilts. I can remember as a little child being scolded “oh do stop fidgeting”. Surely they are intended to calm and comfort.

That’s an interesting anaology, Ann. It makes quite sense, though I think most of just think of keeping our hands busy. My Mom cute not keep her hands still. She would hold crayons or paper or anything she could hold. The blanket was wonderful as it kept her knees warm and she could play with fringe and ruffles.

I don’t actually know who gave it that name, but it has sure become a handy item for those with busy fingers.

We’ll have to think of a new name, Ann.
      Thank you for your thoughts,
      Sandy

I live in Powder Springs, Ga. My mother is constantly picking at her finger nails & constantly trying to get hold of things to keep in her hands to be folded, etc. I need a small fidget quilt or purse asap…she is in a memory care facility and her language has become gibberish so she can’t talk to others. Is there someplace within 30 miles that I can purchase a fidget quilt or purse, or a website that can ship asap?

Hello. It sounds like a Fidget toy is just what you need. There are gals at Etsy, Ebay and Amazon that make things for Fidgeting. There are fidget quilts as well as many other toys. Amazon carries a toy cat that seems to purr and sounds as though it’s breathing.

There are many things you can buy, but there are also many things you can create yourself. Wooden beads on a long piece of yarn or string. Small puzzles for younger children with fewer pieces such as 30/35 piece. My Mom loved baby dolls. My Mom also carried a purse on her arm at all times. Inside she had a fake bank statement (she loved telling folks how much money she had. She had a little change purse with lots of coins. She would count that money alomst every hour. A few old watches and bracelets. Almost any trinket you can think of is more entertaining than you know.

I hope that helps and feel certain there will be many more ideas from others.

I was looking for instructions on how to put one together. Instead as I read the comments I realized there are no “instructions”. Its all about imagination. I love the suggestions for a more masculine theme. I am disabled and make blankets for vets. Alzheimer’s has seriously touched my family and I wanted to do something for dementia patients. You know rotate projects so you dont get bored. Thank you for all the ideas now swimming in my head.

And yep, you got the idea! I have a friend on Etsy who makes them and insists on a list of all the family members favorites. Then the blankets are custom made and …. darling!

      Thank you for stopping by!

I am a seamstress that specializes in conceptual learning. I custom sew Fidget lap quilts/Aprons and activity dolls. I have experience as an RN in the home health arena and find that those with Dementia/Alzheimer’s/Autism need a method of distraction post a surgical procedure and from colostomies to prevent dislodgement by keeping busy fingers away from those items of concern. And Activity lap quilts provide distraction to calm behaviors and the variety of activities reduce boredom and increases attention span. As well as improving dressing skills(Zipper and Buttons). I have been avoiding buttons and making toggles replacing buttons. Buttons cam be dislodged more easily than sewn on toggles. Visit my website for specifics. I also sew activity dolls and Quiet books for busy toddlers. Thank You

      Welcome Loraine,
Oh Loraine, I think the fidget quilt items are more sensory than sightful anyway. Many have zippers, buttons, perhaps velvet or beads. The more items the better. For her, she will probably enjoy the guessing of what she might be feeling. Solid objects too, keys, a spoon– perhaps make it game to see what she recognizes through touch only. I think a duck that squeaked or any toy that made noise would be exceptionally fun for your mom.

You are a wonderful daughter to search for what your Mom would like best.
All the best to you Lorraine and thank you for stopping by to share.

Another great place for finding fidgets for a men’s fidget quilt is your local Habitat for Humanity Restore. I buy small threaded plumbing parts that can be strung on ribbon. They can be screwed together and unscrewed while on the ribbon. I have also found various sizes of rubber, metal and plastic rings that can slide back and forth on a ribbon.

Thank you so much for this reference and the neat ideas.
We often talk about the women and the baby dolls they love, but men do prefer the tools and thinks you mentioned. Great ideas!

Thank you so much for letting us know about Habitat for Humanity Restore as well.

I notice that a good deal of the ‘toys’ and ‘fidget quilts’ appear to be more for the ladies! What kind of things can we do for a ‘manly’ man who has alzheimers?!

You know, Rose, I think you’re right. I do have a friend who makes Fidget quilts for men though. And she takes ideas for his favorite things to add from the family. She’s created some awesome quilts for men.

I have a friend on Facebook who’s hubby was mechanically inclined and takes pleasure with a bowl of nuts and bolts. Matching them up and putting them together, then taking them apart again. If your loved one is fairly along with Alzheimer’s, they often don’t need a purpose for their action. They just need something to do. There is also card games. And Adult coloring, and there are some stunning Color Books and markers for adults.

I know the ladies love Baby Dolls while the men love pets; a small dog, puppy, or whatever he prefers. It’s pretty fascinating to have hummingbird feeders in the summer. They can captivate my attention for hours.

I hope a couple of these ideas will help and I think I’ll work on an article of activities just for the guys.

      Thank you for the idea!
      Sandy

I make male and female fidget quilts and find it more difficult to find suitable objects for men, but will suggest getting a package of those larger soft plastic fishing lures but make sure they do not have a hook, also a friend came up with an idea of sewing a “pocket” onto the quilt, putting a couple of old keys on a cord and sewing them in a position where they can put them in and out of the pocket. I also use the rustic burlap ribbon which I sew across or corner to corner on the quilt. I also use simple buttons, even old neckties as well as stuff from a man’s workshop so long as they could not cut or hurt them. Even little plastic cars or boys’ plastic tools work well.

Rose, Those are some wonderful ideas for Fidget Quilts. I especially like the fishing lures (minus the hook.) I can tell you many men I know would love those.

Some great ideas for others making Fidget Quilts! What lovely pleasure they will bring to those with dementia.

Bless all of you creating these Lovely Fidget Quilts.
